Tech Tips: Flickering LED and CFL outdoor sensor lights
Why do my LEDs or CFLs flicker on my outdoor sensor lights?
This is an issue observed in sensors that are wired with only two wires (i.e. connection between the phase and the lamp). With this type of wiring, it allows a small amount of current to flow through the lamp, even during the ‘off’ period.
With incandescent or halogen lamps, this cannot be detected because the small amount of current is not enough to make the filament glow. With the electronic circuits of LEDs and CFLs, the capacitors will charge up and then discharge in an attempt to start the lamp, resulting in a momentary flash or flicker. In some cases, lamps may even glow very dimly.
