Members are advised that the location of their switchboards affects the requirements for the provisions for sealing of conduits entering from the base. This is outlined in clause 188.8.131.52 of the Wiring Rules.
If a switchboard is located within a building and an air flow can be generated through the switchboard and into the building, then sealing of the conduits is required. This protects against a potential chimney effect that can take place as the result of a fire in the switchboard, potentially damaging the building.
If the switchboard is standalone and a chimney effect is not present, then the sealing of the conduits is not required.
