Load centres in garages
NECA Technical recently had a call from a member who had installed a load centre (sub-board) in a garage to supply light and power for the garage that included an electric garage door. Subsequent to the installation a fault occurred resulting in a RCD tripping which in turn disabled the electric door. As there was no other entry door, it was not possible to gain access to the load centre to reset the RCD and therefore is not compliant with 2.9.2.1 (c) of AS/NZS 3000.
The recommendation in this circumstance, where the only access is through the electric door, would be to mount the load centre on the outside of the garage or ensure there is some form of remote release for the electric door.
