NECA Technical recently had a call from a contractor regarding newly installed LED high bay lights tripping RCDs.
The contractor had installed the lights in accordance with the manufacturer’s instruction in regard to the maximum number of lights for the circuit breaker rating and was well within parameters.
Further investigation identified that the manufacturer's specification that the maximum leakage current for the fittings was less than or equal to 3.5mA. Therefore with the combined leakage current of the fittings, was sufficient to trip the RCD protecting the circuit.
The recommendation is that when designing an installation, all the parameters within the equipment specifications need to be checked carefully to ensure a workable design.
