NECA Technical receives numerous enquiries regarding the installation of heated towel rails in bathrooms.
In most cases, the towel rails are required to be installed in Zone 1 or Zone 2, as classified in clause 220.127.116.11 of AS/NZS 3000. Equipment located in Zone 1 and 2 is required as a minimum, to have a degree of protection IPX4 for domestic bathrooms and IPX5 for communal bathrooms as per clause 18.104.22.168 of AS/NZS 3000.
The degree of protection is outlined in appendix G of AS/NZS 3000. The first number denotes the degree of protection against solid objects and protection against access to hazardous parts. The second number denotes protection against harmful ingress of water.
Table G1b below outlines the degree of protection for the second numeral. Therefore a rating of IPX4 is suitable for locations where splashing from all directions is likely, and IPX5 where hosing from all directions is likely.
