Early release of super but not until mid-April 2020

Members are advised of the following update from Energy Super regarding the recently announced early release of super:

Dear member

You may have heard that the Federal Government has announced temporary measures in response to COVID-19 that impact superannuation.

One of them is the early release of super for members in financial stress.

If this affects you, please note:

  • You cannot apply for the early release of your super until mid-April 2020
  • You need to apply to the Australian Taxation Office – not to Energy Super

To be eligible to claim for the early release of super, you’ll need to be one or more of the following:

  • unemployed; or
  • eligible to receive a job seeker payment, youth allowance for jobseekers, parenting payment (which includes the single and partnered payments), special benefit or farm household allowance; or
  • on or after 1 January 2020:
    • you were made redundant; or
    • your working hours were reduced by 20 per cent or more; or
    • if you’re a sole trader — your business was suspended or there was a reduction in your turnover of 20 per cent or more.
You’ll find more information in the Government’s fact sheet here.

We’re working behind the scenes to make sure we’re ready to make these payments to our members in line with the Government rules from mid-April.

Keep your eye on our website: we’ll be posting all our updates there.

Sincerely

Robyn Petrou
