Non-compliant installations for Battery Energy Storage System inverters

The Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council (ERAC) have advised NECA that some brands of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) inverters are being supplied with a transfer switch arrangement that could result in a non-compliant installation.

The arrangement in these inverters could bypass the installation's MEN and, as a result, downstream RCDs and RCBOs supplying the final sub-circuit will not operate.  The inverters must be installed to comply with Australian installation conditions as specified in AS/NZS 3000:2018 (clause 7.3.8.1.2) and AS/NZS 4777.1:2016 (clauses 5.4.4, 5.4.3 and 5.4.1), including manufacturing standard requirements of AS/NZS 4777.2:2020.
